Athlete of the Month

Sarah and Jackie both tackled the Coast to Coast challenge, completing the entire thing which is no small feat! What is the Coast to Coast challenge you ask? It all starts in the wonderful land of Walt Disney World where the ladies took on the Dopey challenge a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and full marathon back-to-back all while wearing some pretty cool costumes. They then boarded a Disney Cruise, ran a 5k on the ship (how cool?!) and ran a half marathon at Disneyland in California. These ladies showed great commitment and dedication to their training over many months and successfully completed every single race in this challenge, nailing some pretty dope(y) medals. There is no doubt that these ladies both deserve athlete of the month for February, read below to hear what they have to say and check out their cool pictures. Sarah says: “Running Dopey was a bucket list item since I first heard about RunDisney. Finding out they were bringing back Disneyland half marathon weekend the weekend after Dopey created a spur of the moment decision with an “oh no, what have I done” thought soon after.  I never would have been able to stay disciplined enough to get through the months of training if it wasn’t for Coach Robin creating an effective workout plan that was flexible enough to work around my schedule while still keeping me on task for the bigger picture. The support from her and Coach Jeff while at the races, answering all the questions and responding to messages at 3:00 am, was amazing and gave the extra motivation to do my best and not let them down.  I’m so excited for Ears Up Racing and already planning my next RunDisney event!” Jackie says: “I am humbled and honored to be chosen as Athlete of the Month! I spent the majority of 2023 thinking “what did I get myself into?” after Sarah and I were officially registered for Dopey. I knew I could run a 5K and a 10K and a Half and even a full marathon, but I wasn’t sure my legs and feet could handle 4 days of back-to-back racing. The extra weight I’d gained since my last full marathon had affected me tremendously, both physically and psychologically. My biggest struggle in training was doing long solo runs on the weekends in the cold, when I had previously trained with a buddy. Fortunately, with Coach Kristin’s guidance, plenty of training, and successfully losing 20 pounds, I was ready to tackle this huge challenge. I hope to continue to inspire others to get out there and compete, even if they don’t have the ideal “athlete’s body.” As a formerly paralyzed teenager, I want to encourage people that anything is possible-with hard work, the right attitude, and an AWESOME community like Rise Up Racing!”
